Cake Smashing Tips

So...your baby is turning one, and you want a memorable photoshoot -- then you MUST do a cake smashing session! One year olds are sometimes (most times) a little difficult to photograph. They have a mind of their own and they are on the move! Getting their one year old photographs are NOT on the top of their agenda!!

Cake smashing sometimes SAVES these shoots...and it gives you adorable memories to have for years to come. Below are some helpful hints to make the most out of your cake smashing session!

~ Find a store that sells 6 inch Birthday Cakes near your home. The Walmart in Crystal Lake or the Jewel in Cary sells very nice ones. You can feel free to make your own too...just use LOTS of brightly colored icing to frost your cake with.

~ The BRIGHTER the better! Lots of icing and bright colors works best.

~ Sometimes the cakes are frozen in the case at the store. It is best to buy your birthday cake a day ahead of time, and store it in your refrigerator. Then, the morning of your cake smashing session - please leave your cake out on the counter so it can come to room temperature. This allows the icing to get nice and soft and mushy...making it much easier for your 1 year old to make a mess of the cake!

~ What to wear?? A simple diaper cover looks great - I have a bunch to choose from - or you can bring your own. Tutu's on little girls are adorable (please provide your own if you choose this). Cute t-shirts / Birthday t-shirts look great. A diaper and birthday bib is adorable too.

~ Feel free to bring extras like balloons and a hat. This little guy below is the first little one that has wore his birthday hat for the entire smash session - so don't get your hopes up on that one! ;-)

~ A couple more things for the session...please bring extra wipes, a towel and an extra outfit to wear home. I have diluted dish soap for you to use...it seems to cut the grease well...but you may want to bring some baby shampoo too.
